I have nine of these sheets, but eight make a better rectangle. Plus it leaves something to guess, although I think it's an impossible one. Who is the host of this very interesting event you think? Don't even try if you're not Dutch. Or emigrated.

We had a great weekend, we marched against prorogation, and we searched for an Afghan coat. I decided I want an Afghan coat, embroidered and all, Eliane the hippie. But I guess I was early with my decision, we found only one, and that one was ten sizes too small. I predict that Afghan coats will be everywhere next winter. Maybe I can have one made in Afghanistan. No birthday cake this weekend, but I did produce two apple pies. My oven is broken, so I made two pies, baked them at my neighbours, and gave them one of the pies. They didn't mind me using their oven at all!

Everything I did in 2009 (okay, I smuggled in some January 2010) You can see them larger on this web page. I sent it to all my last year's clients, as a little new year's attention. I thought it'd be nice for them to see what I have done for others, in case they don't know. And so that they won't forget about me this year, because I plan to do as least as much.

This happens when clients discuss my work in meetings. Guess I should be grateful I don't have to attend them. Wonder what I'll be asked to change after the next meeting.

Navy_Uniform.jpg
Remember I blogged this uniformed relative, and that I said I didn't know much about him, not even what kind of uniform he was wearing? Well, our dear neighbour Gerald, who is a historian, found the uniform in a book about the first world war. The reason why it was hard to find is simple. Not only was Holland neutral in the first WW, but on top of that it isn't an army uniform, it's navy. Which makes sense, because the Duvekot family lived in Goes, which is on the Scheldt river, right by the sea. Now obviously our relative wasn't a general or an admiral, like the ones in the book, maybe he was a lieutenant. The admiral has four of those beautiful stars on his collar, our ancestor only one. But the olive branch on the hat is the same, and so are the shoulder epaulets. And the sabre.

From left to right: Annemarie Jorritsma (mayor of Almere), Arie Boomsma (christian TV host), Clairy Polak (news anchor), Dirk Scheringa (CEO of a bankrupted bank), Frans Bauer (folk singer), Gerard Joling (high pitched singer), Hugo Borst (lovely and cynical), Johan Cruijff (legendary soccer player), Sophie Hilbrand (tv host), Wouter Bos (finance minister). And on another note I discovered this weekend that there actually are people who get French pop music. French people!

And the parental thingies are also back from their winter break. And I am officially out of work, after a continuous stream of I can hardly remember how long. Call the newspaper!

There they are. You didn't think I had given up on them did you? After all of your remarks. Which were quite helpful. Wouter's leg seems a bit strange now I see the picture this small. It seemed all right, mmm. But then, he is wearing a thumb screw. How would your leg look. Well, let's wait and see what the client says. Maybe it'll be back to the drawing board. I hope not.

we always leave our back door open

You are urban hillbillies! Toronto Life needs your blog.... that is what Julia said after I told her what had happened, god it's still freezing as I write this. Our dear neighbours Danny and Yvonne had invited us for a wonderful Sunday Dinner and get together with local illustrators. A Sunday Dinner is something that takes place in the afternoon and consists of Coca Cola ham and trifle, so we were back around seven, Otger had gone home a little earlier than that. I found it oddly cold in the house, but I didn't really think about it, I guess because of all the wine I had with the dinner. After ten minutes or so I asked Otger whether he had walked the dog. No, he said, because it was so cold, the door was open. Huh, which door? The back door, wide open. What, actually physically open?! Jesus, that's why it's cold. I check if our wallets are still there, which they are. I would have seen footsteps in the snow anyway if somebody had been inside. Then I notice Orbit's bowl, the water in it is frozen. I turn on the tap, brown clumpy water comes out. Orbit is under a blanket now, warming up. Urban hillbillies.

It's been too long, but here I am again in Holland's coolest newspaper. If that isn't a good start of the new year, I don't know what is. Happy new year to all of you!!
