Start: Wrightwood
End: Cajon Pass
I pack, shower, get my 5.5 liters of water. I eat the fruit I bought yesterday and head into town. Wrightwood is lovely. Coffee and a big warm cinnamon roll with dripping glaze in the sun at the bakery. I try to organize a ride back to the trail. I can make this simpler if I just hitchhike. Simple is good.
If it looks as if I’ve got the mileage backwards in the title of this post, that’s because I go backwards. I don’t like the weather, and by going up to Inspiration point I can spend the night, when the weather should improve , at lower elevations where it’s warmer. I can then hitchhike back to Wrightwood or Inspiration point and continue from there.
Its cold up on the mountain, near freezing, but the wind isn’t bad, and I take off my down jacket quickly: too warm. I run into the poodle dog bush. It’s not as much as I thought and I can get around it by using my poles. I’ll have to wash them tonight or tomorrow. The rest of the stretch is pretty boring, but I hear from a nobo hiker that someone an hour ahead of me has arranged for a ride with an angel. Great! If I can catch up, I won’t have to hitchhike in the dark or stay at the Best Western again. I step up my pace to what for me is breakneck speed. I end up averaging 3.2 mph for the entire day. I have time for a beer.

that is an amazing photograph.
