I zero in Mammoth, go to the outfitter to buy soap for my sleeping bag. I finally find the Western Mountaineering Flash jacket that I have wanted for so long. New socks, a more robust titanium cooking pot than the zip-lock container I was using and a new long-sleeve shirt too. Deet for Tuolumne. I wash my sleeping bag in the bathtub. The bag looked reasonably clean, but the water that comes out is black. Then I try to dry it. The dryer turns the down into hard wet clumps. I have to go to get tennis balls to remove the wet clumps of down from the bag in the dryer. It takes a while, but it works fabulously. Meanwhile I get a massage at the spa. My hiking buddies say that’s “not gay at all”. It is wonderful, I should do this more often. As the knot under my right shoulder blade clears up, it becomes clear that the rest of my back and legs are stiff and knotted up all over. The masseuse works through everything diligently, including my feet, which, even though I scrubbed them clean just before are still black. I’m very refreshed when she’s done. I make a detailed plan to get to Echo Lake on time to meet S. in South Lake Tahoe on the 19th. It looks very doable. Natty makes burritos and we watch a boxing match on TV. We wanted to get back to the trail, but it’s just not going to happen. There goes my plan, as usual. It’s not a problem. I’ll still make it.
